In 2017 all our acts managed to reach the site on time and without suffering kerbside hernia related problems. Our thanks go to all our acts, who often travel some distance, often at short notice and at considerable personal inconvenience to give you a great day out. Our continued policy of varying the nature of the acts ensured there was something for everybody in 2017. Every year I ask Begfesters to write a short review of each act and every year without fail they let me down, so if you want to know how good our acts are, you’ll have to buy a ticket. Check out our great acts appearing at Begfest 2018. They are shown in no particular order ( either running or preference ). Links to youtube videos of past performances ( courtesy of Roz ) can be found on the VIDZ page
On The Permanently Oblong Stage 2018
Begfest 2018 is very pleased to announce that Marcus Bonfanti will be making his Begfest debut. Book early to avoid disappointment as tickets are sure to sell quickly.
Since releasing his first full length album in 2008 Marcus’s solo career has gone from strength to strength and seen him tour with, and open shows for, Robert Cray, Chuck Berry, Shuggie Otis, Philip Sayce, Jack Bruce, The Straits, Beth Hart, John Mayall, Beth Rowley and JJ Grey. He also fronts The Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion; a monthly residency held at London’s prestigious venue and has worked as a sideman for PP Arnold, Ginger Baker, Earl Thomas, Joe Louis Walker, Robbie Macintosh, Hamish Stuart, Mark Feltham, Eric Burdon and Buddy Whittington.
In 2014 Marcus was asked to join and front legendary British Rock & Roll band “Ten Years After” and will be touring and recording with them alongside his own solo career.
His 2008 debut album, ‘Hard Times,’ set the scene and sent some subtly effective messages about a new British voice demanding to be heard. 2010’s ‘What Good Am I To You’ (Listed in Classic Rock Magazine’s top 50 albums of 2010 & Single “Give Me Your Cash” top 40 songs of 2010) made good on all those promises. The critical acclaim that both albums received earned him the 2012 British Blues Award for Best Songwriter and the 2013 & 2014 Award for Best Acoustic performer as well as nominations in Guitarist, Vocalist & Album categories for the last four years.
“Shake The Walls”, released in June 2013, was listed in Classic Rock Magazines’ top 5 Blues Albums of the year as well as getting airplay on BBC Radio 2 and 6Music and much critical acclaim in the music press and national newspapers.
SHYER are a female-fronted indie 4-Piece hailing from Cambridge, known for playing upbeat originals with punchy guitar riffs, jaunty bass lines and bright indie-pop melodies.
SHYER started writing music together in October 2016 and began gigging in a full band formation in February 2017. In the short time they have been together they have had regular airplay of their tracks ‘Reckless Arts’ and ‘Hideout’ on BBC Introducing Cambridgeshire, as well as frequent airplay on local radio shows Cambridge 105’s The New Music Generator, Cam FM Breakthrough and CAM FM Totally Wired. In May 2017, they were selected from 1,823 submissions via ReverbNation in a competition to have two tracks professionally mixed and mastered at Crooks Hall Studios. It was here that they produced and released their first two singles ‘Hideout’ and ‘Bad Company’. The band secured their first main stage festival slot at Peterborough’s ‘Green Meadows’ festival in 2017. Towards the end of 2017, the band spent time in London recording three further singles with The Animal farm, the first of which will be released in late February this year.
“Futurist R&B laced with Rock” – APRIL BLUE’s songs of life, lust and loneliness spring from a bed of brooding electronic soundscapes. Frontman Ozz LP’s soulful vocals drive the music through scenes of lullaby and desperation, finding their perfect compliment in the deep rhymes of rapper Ian Morcher. Meanwhile, the sultry grooves of the band masterfully walk the line between laid back sleaze and gritty Rock. Their original sound has earned them recognition as ‘Best Pop Artist’ at the NMG awards, ‘Slickest Sound’ at the NVMAs and backing from BBC Introducing, where their third single ‘ ‘Valentine’ featured as track of the week. Debut album Pop Girls Etc is “fresh, vibrant and exciting” says David Durant of Brooklands Radio, whilst Edward Adoo of BBC Three Counties described APRIL BLUE as “amazing”. Their live show is both energetic and moving in equal measure. Songs weave together to create an immersive musical experience that is at once entertaining and emotionally engaging, as their dynamic sound and musical dexterity finds its foundation in heartfelt and sincere songwriting.
The four piece take their inspiration from an array of artists such as The 1975, The Weekend and Royal Blood, drawing on their varied musical backgrounds to fuse genres and create a sound all their own. APRIL BLUE’s sonic exploration knows no bounds. They are a Rock band with an R&B heart. Let yourself be seduced.
Drawn Together by the tides of time, Strolling on the shores of creative endeavour. These five musicians of the metropolis gathered together to defy gravity, and play while standing up. Inspired by the songs of Alan Rondeau, harmonies flow, solos grow and la musique blossoms like, well like blossom. Alan’s lyrics cover all aspects of life, from love and lust, to drink and death. Eclectic in style, the music steps gracefully between haunting and lyrical, strides purposefully down the folk road to the party in the park. When you see Palmerston perform you are always left with a song in your heart and a smile on your face. During their 7 year existence, they have been very fortunate to play at many festivals and venues. From being on tour with Albert Lee and Ralph McTel, supporting The Moulettes and Mad Dog McCray, TopLoader, Eve Sellis. 2018 brings much cheer as they are booked on Folk on the Pier in Cromer, supporting Home Service and Richard Digence and also make a return to the Stables Theatre in Milton Keynes to launch their new album.
